About

Sarah Hughes CD(DONA)

Hello! I am Sarah, a childbirth educator, and birth doula in Georgetown, TX. I am a wife and mother to one vibrant, active girl. I am not sure I noticed early on; but looking back on my life I was always someone that wanted to know more. Which is why when I was pregnant with my daughter, I dove in headfirst to all the research, books, and any information I could get my hands on about birth and pregnancy. I was inspired by it. Everything about it seemed to leave me in awe.

Even after I had given birth, I could not seem to stop digging further, wanting to know more and continue learning. I have always been inspired by the history of women coming together for births. Wisdom of generations shared and passed down, to be used to rally around and support each other through the transformational process. I want to be a part of that legacy.

I am constantly learning and expanding my knowledge to support my clients in the best way possible. I believe that every birthing person can benefit from the presence of a doula, no matter what type of birth is best for you.

We are extreme thankful for Sarah and highly recommend her! We couldn’t have done this without her support. My husband and I and first time parents and she was able to answer all the questions we had. She was always quick to respond to emails & text msgs. She always checked in and never made me feel alone. Without a doubt, we will hire her again if we have a second child.

Former Doula Client

A doula is..."a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help [them] achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible." - (DONA International)

"Doulas nurture and support the birthing person throughout labor and birth. Their essential role is to provide continuous labor support to the mother, no matter what decisions the mother makes or how she gives birth. " (EBB - Evidence on Doulas)

Doulas are not only for those seeking a natural birth, but doulas can help in all types of births; from unmedicated, to cesareans and everything in between.

This may look like suggesting different laboring positions, or providing counterpressure. Sometimes it looks like giving you information and research on a certain procedure, or helping you know what questions to ask to ensure you are making fully informed decisions about your care.

Research Indicates:

39% decreased risk of cesarean

15% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth

10% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief

Shorter labors by 41 minutes on average

38% decrease in the baby’s risk of a low five minute Apgar score

31% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a doula if I am not planning a natural birth?

Yes! A doula's presence is benefitial for any type of birth. I believe that every birth should be as individualized and unique as the people experiencing it. Waterbirth at home? Awesome! Planned cesarean? Cool! My ultimate goal is supporting you, in whatever journey your birth takes.

Does a doula take the place of my partner?

No. We are in no way trying to take over or diminish your partner's role in the birth process. If anything, we help them to be more involved and help them with information on what is happening and how they may be able to step in and help. Even giving your partner the freedom to get some rest if needed, or cover the hip squeezes while they run to the bathroom. Making sure you are continually supported, and that you both feel equipped for the road ahead.

Does a doula take the place of a midwive or OB?

Nope. While doulas are trained, they are not medical professionals. A doula will not perform any clinical tasks or provide any medical advice or diagnosis.

What areas do you serve?

I currently am accepting clients in central and north Austin, Georgetown, Pflugerville, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Liberty Hill, Salado, Hutto, Killeen, Belton, and as far north as Temple.
